Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Matthew 24:12-13 NIV
In Matthew 24, Jesus answered a question His disciples brought to Him in private. Standing firm in the secret place begins there. The Lord had just spoken publicly about the temple’s fall. Yet the fuller explanation came later, on the Mount of Olives, when His disciples drew near and asked. That detail matters, because it shows that some understanding opens only in closeness.
Jesus Showed the Path to Standing Firm in the Secret Place
Matthew 24:3 says the disciples came to Jesus privately. They were troubled, so they sought clarification from Him. Public conversation had started the matter. However, private fellowship carried it deeper. Jesus did not only give them information about the end. He also showed them a pattern for knowing His heart.
There are things God makes known in the secret place. He is not hiding them out of cruelty. Rather, He invites us into relationship. If I stay at a distance, I should not expect the same clarity as the person who comes near. So the call is simple: come to Him, ask Him, and remain before Him until He speaks.
The Majority Does Not Decide Your Ending
Jesus then warned about deception, turmoil, persecution, betrayal, and false prophets. Furthermore, He said wickedness would increase and the love of most would grow cold (Matthew 24:9-12). That is a sobering forecast. Yet it is not the whole message. In Matthew 24:13, Jesus also says that the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
That means the condition of the many does not have to become my condition. Widespread failure never gives me permission to fail. Even if love grows cold around me, I do not need to let my heart grow cold with it. Instead, I must pursue standing firm in the secret place. Private nearness to Jesus trains the heart for public pressure.
The same passage that warns about the last days also reveals where endurance begins. It begins with disciples who come privately and listen carefully. Indeed, standing firm in the secret place is not escape from reality. It is how we receive light, discernment, and strength for reality. When Jesus opens His heart, He steadies ours.
Living It Out
Do not measure your future by the failures around you. Come to Jesus in secret, listen carefully, and let His voice steady your heart. When love grows cold around you, choose nearness to Him and stand firm.
