Seeking God in the Secret Place to Stand Firm - Matthew 24:3 Seeking God in the Secret Place to Stand Firm - Matthew 24:3

Seeking God in the Secret Place to Stand Firm

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Matthew 24:3 NIV

There is a question the disciples asked that reveals something profound about spiritual understanding. After Jesus told them the temple would be utterly destroyed, they did not raise the matter in the crowd. Matthew 24:3 records that they came to him privately — on the Mount of Olives, alone with Jesus. They asked when this would happen and what the sign of his coming would be. That choice to come privately is deeply significant. It is in that hidden space that seeking God in the secret place truly begins, and it is there that God opens his heart to those who draw near.

What the Public Crowd Could Not Receive

The original conversation about the temple took place in public. However, the deeper revelation — the answer to what lies ahead — went only to those who followed Jesus away from the crowd. Only the disciples enjoyed the privilege of that private access. This did not happen by chance. It reflects a consistent pattern in Scripture: God makes certain things known, but they belong to the secret place, not to open discussion.

There are things God desires to reveal in our own day — insights, warnings, and knowledge of his heart. Yet they are exclusively for those willing to engage him privately. As long as we remain unavailable to seek him in that hidden place, those matters will stay hidden from us. God will not withhold them from the one who genuinely pursues him — but consequently, he will not force the secret on those who are not seeking.

Seeking God in the Secret Place: The Key to Endurance

Jesus went on in that private conversation to describe a season of serious spiritual pressure. Many will come in his name and deceive many. Wars and rumours would spread. Furthermore, in verse 9, his followers would face persecution; all nations would hate them because of him. Many will turn away from the faith, betray one another, and false prophets will arise (Matthew 24:10–11).

Then comes a sobering declaration: because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold. Yet the very next sentence holds a promise — the one who stands firm to the end will be saved (Matthew 24:12–13).

The point here is not the number whose love grows cold. Rather, it is that even in that season of widespread coldness and defection, standing firm remains possible. This will not be the story of everyone. The experience of the majority should not dictate your outcome. Whatever causes many to fall does not therefore need to affect you. Your whole pursuit must be to stand among those who endure.

The Promise Hidden in the Private Conversation

Here is what deserves careful attention. Jesus disclosed this vital understanding — that standing firm is possible even when most fall away — in a private conversation. Moreover, He revealed the very warnings about the end of the age to those who had come to seek Him. The pattern is unmistakeable.

Those who engage God privately receive the revelation they need to navigate what lies ahead. Indeed, seeking God in the secret place is not a spiritual luxury. It is the means by which a believer receives the insight, the grounding, and the grace to stand. When pressure mounts, this is what holds.

The invitation remains open. God has not changed. The secret place is still accessible to anyone who will come. This is the call before every follower of Jesus — and ultimately, it is the call you must answer.

Living It Out

Come to God privately and consistently. The disciples came to Jesus alone, and He opened His heart to them. Seeking God in the secret place is not optional — it is the path to receiving what you need to stand firm to the end.
