Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

The Apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 7:1 present a powerful invitation to purity. This command is a direct continuation of Paul’s preceding discussion in chapter 6. To grasp its profound meaning, we must first understand God’s incredible promises to us. Paul reminds us that we have a sacred covenant with God.
Ultimately, this covenant offers a deep and intimate relationship with Him, one that calls us to a life of purity and devotion. In 2 Corinthians 6:18, God promises: “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
The Creator of the universe offers to be our Father; consequently, we must respond to this. This promise comes with a condition, however. We must first heed His call to “come out from them and be separate” (2 Corinthians 6:17). This means stepping away from the world’s influences and anything that could defile our faith. When we do, He promises, “I will receive you.” Certainly, it is an astonishing privilege to be part of God’s family and to be known as His beloved sons and daughters.
Given these incredible promises, we must respond with a life of holiness. We are to purify ourselves from everything that contaminates our bodies and spirits. This is not just a suggestion; it is a heartfelt response to God’s grace. Purification involves a conscious effort to remove all hindrances and contaminants that stand in the way of a right relationship with our heavenly Father.
Therefore, this process of sanctification—of setting ourselves apart for God’s use—is essential for a life that honours Him. Our ultimate aim, then, is to perfect holiness. This is a lifelong journey of growth and transformation. It is driven by a deep reverence for God and a desire to honour the one who has welcomed us so graciously.

Reflect on your life today. Do some areas contaminate your body or spirit and hinder your relationship with God? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal those areas to you. Then, with a prayerful heart, commit to a journey of purity—purifying yourself and setting yourself apart for God’s purposes. Remember the incredible promises He has made to you.
