Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
Daniel 4:29-30 NIV
This passage captures a moment of pride and self-exaltation from King Nebuchadnezzar. His critical mistake was claiming God’s glory for himself. He failed to honour God and recognise Him as the source of his success. The importance of giving God the glory is a central theme throughout scripture. By attributing the magnificence of Babylon to his own strength and ability, Nebuchadnezzar ignored the divine hand that made it all possible. This story serves as a caution about the importance of giving God the glory in all circumstances.
When we examine our own lives—our achievements, wealth, and even our good health—what thoughts fill our hearts? Do we, like Nebuchadnezzar, see ourselves as the sole architects of our success? Or do we acknowledge God as the ultimate source of every blessing we enjoy? A key aspect of Christian living is giving God the glory for all things and in all situations.
Good health is a precious gift from God. Likewise, financial breakthroughs, career advancements, and even the simplest joys of life. These are all expressions of His grace; they are not rewards for our strength or wisdom but evidence of His unmerited favour. Therefore, it is fitting and essential to give Him all the glory. This is the essence of giving God the glory.
The story of Nebuchadnezzar warns us against pride. Scripture reminds us in Zechariah 4:6: “It is not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord. So, we must guard against the temptation to attribute our successes to our own efforts, forgetting that God is the true source of all we have and are.
Furthermore, a heart of gratitude and humility is vital in maintaining a proper perspective. Each blessing we receive—be it a promotion, financial stability, or good health—should prompt us to honour God. By doing so, we not only please Him but also safeguard ourselves against the dangers of pride.
In conclusion, let us learn from Nebuchadnezzar’s mistake and resolve to always give God the glory for our successes. By acknowledging Him as the source of our blessings, we cultivate a heart of humility and gratitude. Every achievement and every moment of joy is a reflection of His grace, not our own greatness.
Therefore, as we navigate our daily lives, let us continually ask ourselves: Who is receiving the glory—me or God? May our answer always point back to Him, for His glory is the purpose of all creation.
