Whose Voice Are You Listening To?

And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

After the fall in Genesis 3, God walked in the garden and called out to Adam and Eve. Scripture records that they hid among the trees, and when God asked Adam, “Where are you?”, Adam replied, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” God’s next question pierced the heart of the matter: “Who told you that you were naked?” (Genesis 3:11). Until that moment, Adam drew all his understanding from God’s voice. The Lord Himself taught Adam and served as the sole source of his knowledge and guidance. By asking this question, God revealed that Adam had begun listening to another voice.

Adam was never meant to take instructions from anyone except God. Heaven’s authority flowed from God to the man, and then from the man to his wife. God commanded Adam not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and Adam carried the responsibility of passing that instruction on. In every matter, the man’s foundation of truth had to remain God Himself.

This principle still holds today. As believers, we must guard our ears and hearts against the enemy’s voice. The devil speaks only lies, deceit, and destruction. If we give him room, his words corrupt our perception and lead us away from God’s plan. God’s words, however, give life. His instruction sustains us, and we must treasure it more than daily bread. His voice should shape our beliefs, direct our choices, and define our identity.

This truth also applies in marriage. A man should view his wife, and a wife her husband, through the lens of God’s Word—not the accusations or distortions of the enemy. Whenever we feel tempted to judge one another harshly, we must ask: “Who told me this? Did it come from God, or from another voice?” Only God’s perspective brings truth and life.

Words that do not come from God distort reality and cause harm. His words, however, carry power, hope, and restoration. For this reason, we must keep our ears tuned to Him above all else. As Peter once declared to Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

Living It Out

Pause today and reflect on the voices shaping your thoughts. Do they spring from God’s truth, or from lies that weaken faith and distort reality? Silence every voice that contradicts God’s Word. Fix your heart on His voice alone, and let His truth guide your life, your relationships, and your decisions. Only God’s words bring life—listen to Him and follow where He leads.
