Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Colossians 3:23-24 NIV
Have you ever wondered if the way you work, speak, or relate to others matters to God? Many people limit worship to Sunday services, but Paul shows us that God is interested in every detail of our lives. In Colossians 3 and 4, he gives clear and practical instructions for Christian households and for believers in general. These words reveal the new way of life we are called to live as we serve Christ daily, not just in church, but in every area of life.
Wives should submit to their husbands as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands must love their wives with devotion and care. Children should obey their parents, because this pleases the Lord. Fathers must not provoke or embitter their children but nurture them with patience. Servants and workers should obey their earthly masters sincerely, with reverence for the Lord, and not simply to gain human approval.
Paul emphasises this principle in Colossians 3:23–24. This passage teaches us that every part of life matters to God. Our relationships, careers, and daily tasks are not just earthly duties; they form part of our higher calling in Christ. Each action, no matter how ordinary, gives us the chance to live for God’s purpose. Love, care, and diligence do not stop with people. They flow out of our devotion to Christ and express true worship.
God longs to be at the centre of all that we do. He is not only concerned with church gatherings. He desires that we involve Him in our marriages and families, our friendships and communities, our workplaces and businesses, and even our hidden, private moments. Worship is not limited to Sunday; it is a daily lifestyle.
Therefore, Paul urges us to live with sincerity and not with “eye-service”. Our faithfulness must not depend on whether others see us. What we do in secret matters just as much as what we do in public. Every choice, whether seen or unseen, can glorify Christ when we act from a heart of worship.
This is the life God calls us to embrace—a life of wholehearted service. Whatever we do, we must do it as unto the Lord. Our actions may serve people, but ultimately, they honour Christ Himself.
