Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

In Matthew chapter 19, a wealthy young man approached Jesus. He asked, “What good deed must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus, however, responded by pointing at the greatest commandments. The man confidently stated he had kept them all since his youth. Then, Jesus presented a specific challenge. This encounter powerfully illustrates what hinders following Christ for many people.
Jesus told the man, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Matthew 19:21). The Bible notes the young man walked away sad. His great wealth caused this sorrow. Consequently, I often reflect on why Jesus gave such a direct command. Initially, this raises questions about wealth and discipleship. Does this mean every rich person must sell everything to follow Jesus?
Upon careful reflection, this specific instruction is not a universal requirement. Rather, Jesus spoke directly to the man’s heart. The man may have kept the law outwardly. However, God desired a much deeper commitment from him. Indeed, this commitment proves essential for truly following Jesus.
The Call to Full Surrender
Indeed, anyone wishing to follow Jesus faces core terms. A complete willingness to surrender is paramount. Following Jesus can, and often does, demand everything from one’s life. Therefore, the crucial question is our readiness. Are we willing to let go of anything for God’s Kingdom?
Jesus illustrated this principle beautifully. For instance, He likened the Kingdom of God to a precious pearl. A merchant diligently sought this pearl. Ultimately, when he found one of immense value, he sold all he owned. He did this to acquire that single, precious pearl. Similarly, the rich young ruler also sought something valuable in Jesus. Nevertheless, he was unwilling to pay the price. His great wealth became his ultimate barrier. Moreover, his attachment prevented true discipleship.
Nothing Held Back from Christ
Following Jesus does not automatically mean one cannot have money. Likewise, wealth itself does not prevent following Him. Instead, it means we cannot hold anything so dear that we are unwilling to surrender it. We must willingly release it for Christ’s sake. Furthermore, nothing must hold a higher place than Christ in our hearts.
If anything takes precedence over Christ, it risks pulling us away. This applies to possessions, relationships, or even careers. Ultimately, anything we refuse to surrender for Christ’s sake can hinder us. It blocks us from achieving God’s purpose and plans for our lives. This highlights what hinders following Christ on a deeply personal level.
Living It Out
Therefore, consider carefully what you hold most dear. Indeed, honestly ask yourself if anything hinders following Christ fully. This might include your career, family, or other relationships. These things are not inherently sinful. However, if they become more important than Christ, they may block God’s divine purpose for you. Consequently, reflect today and release anything holding you back.
