It is better to trust and take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in man.
Psalm 118:8 AMPC
God is sovereign. He governs the affairs of the whole world. There is nothing that has happened or will happen that He does not know. Yet, how often do we promise ourselves success through human means (such as promises from people) and visible preparations without considering the Divine Providence or attributing so much to it?
Many a time, we only return to God after we have experienced disappointment from men. Some even go to the extent of blaming God when the unexpected happened to them. They accused Him of neglecting them; meanwhile, that was the path they chose – to trust in men instead of God.
This verse highlights the stark contrast between the reliability of God and the fallibility of humans. While humans are prone to mistakes, biases, and limitations, God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and unchanging. We can only truly count on God to guide us through life’s challenges and uncertainties.
The scriptures constantly remind us to trust in God alone.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.”
Isaiah 26:4
The verse above, shows us that God is a rock-solid refuge that we can always turn to. He is the only one who is completely trustworthy and dependable, no matter what happens in our lives. When we put our trust in God, we can have confidence that He will guide us in the right direction and protect us from harm.
Trusting in God brings us deeper joy and peace than anything else can offer. When we put our trust in human beings or other things, we may experience temporary happiness, but it will ultimately leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. On the other hand, when we trust in God, we experience a sense of peace and contentment that can only come from knowing that we are in the hands of a loving and faithful God.
“It is better” says the Psalmist, more wise, more comfortable, more secure, more reliable, to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man, yeah, even in yourself. There is nothing, not even anyone that’s worth trusting over God. The only trust that can never be betrayed is the trust in the Lord.
