Jesus was the Son of God, but he still suffered, and through his sufferings he learned to obey whatever God says.
Hebrews 5:8 ERV
Some believers regard obedience as something that is optional. While another category obeys the instructions given to them only when it is easy and favourable but forsake any other instructions that does not seem to be convenient.
In the scriptures, we are called to be obedient in many areas which includes obedience to those who are in the place of authority, obedience to our parents, and ultimately, obedience to God – which can be either in His direct instructions to us or in the exercise of the former.
Obedience is an act of submitting to an authority. Obedience to God is a willingness to comply with and totally submit to the commands and instructions of God. No instruction is too small or too big to obey. Trust precedes obedience, therefore, our obedience to God is dependent on how much we trust in His Word. It will be impossible to obey a person whom you do not trust. So, trust in God is the foundation of true obedience. When you trust God, then you can surely obey Him.
Besides, God’s instructions become manifest in our obedience, showcasing our love for Him.
For the [true] love of God is this: that we habitually keep His commandments and remain focused on His precepts. And His commandments and His precepts are not difficult [to obey].
1 John 5:3 AMP
Hence, we see our Lord Jesus – a perfect example for every believer. “Jesus was the Son of God”, yet “…he learned to obey whatever God says.”. He was always seeking to obey the Father’s instructions even to the point of death. It was His total obedience to the Father that brought us the salvation we enjoy today, and with the hope of eternal life.
So, if the Son of God, Jesus Christ, learned obedience, it is required of us as followers of Jesus to walk in obedience to God directly and to human authorities. Adequately doing this only comes when we learn obedience.
Trust and Obey!
