Unity in Service: Walking God’s Way Together

Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people

Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭29‬-‭30‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In Exodus 4:27-30, we witness a powerful example of unity, obedience, and divine order in the partnership between Moses and Aaron. When they met, it became clear that God had called both of them to the same mission. Although each man had a different role, they were united in purpose, working together to fulfil God’s assignment.

Verse 29 captures a seemingly simple but profound moment: “Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites.” This cooperation wasn’t casual—it reflected intentional obedience and shared responsibility. The task God had given wasn’t meant for one man alone. It required partnership. Neither Moses nor Aaron attempted to carry the weight of the mission on their own. Instead, they embraced the strength of unity.

However, unity didn’t blur their individual callings. Verse 30 highlights this beautifully. Aaron, appointed as the spokesperson, relayed everything the Lord had said to Moses. He didn’t alter the message, nor did he claim the revelation as his own. He honoured the divine structure by stating clearly that the message came from God through Moses. Meanwhile, Moses performed the miraculous signs God had given him. Aaron used his voice; Moses used his staff. Both fulfilled their roles with faithfulness and humility.

This passage teaches us that spiritual assignments are often both collective and personal. While the mission may involve others, each person has a unique responsibility. Moses and Aaron respected that balance. They did not compete for relevance. They didn’t overstep each other’s roles. Instead, they served in harmony, knowing that God’s work required both their obedience and their mutual honour.

Reflecting on this truth, it reminds me that whenever God gives me a mission, He also gives me a specific role to play. Even if I am called to lead, I must never lose sight of the collective nature of God’s work. The presence of others in the assignment is not a threat—it is a divine provision. I must make space for others, walk in humility, and invite their contributions with grace.

But alongside collective responsibility lies personal accountability. I cannot delegate what God has specifically called me to do. I must show up fully, performing my part with faithfulness. At the same time, I must not hinder others from fulfilling theirs. Leadership is not control—it is stewardship. I should not silence or suppress those whom God has also called and equipped.

Even if others make mistakes or need correction, I must allow them room to grow. They answer to the same God who called me. He alone assigns roles, equips vessels, and determines purpose. My task is to support, not to dominate; to encourage, not to diminish.

As believers—especially those serving in leadership—we must not overlook this vital lesson. God’s mission thrives in unity, functions through mutual respect, and advances in an atmosphere of humility. Moses and Aaron’s example calls us to honour God’s structure, embrace our role, and create space for others to flourish.
