Psalm 56:3-4 NIV
David penned Psalm 56 during an intensely challenging time. He had been captured by the Philistines and also hid from King Saul. Indeed, he even feigned madness to escape the danger surrounding him. Amidst these daunting circumstances, David declared a profound truth about trusting God when facing fear.
Lessons from David’s Trust
David boldly declared his unwavering faith. He wrote in Psalm 56:3-4, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You, in God, whose word I praise. In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” David reiterated this powerful sentiment in verses 10 and 11. He praised God’s word, moreover, confirming his trust and dismissing all fear of man.
David understood the true nature of his adversaries. His enemies were merely ordinary men, whose lives proved fleeting and transient. They were not immortal. Instead, they were simply mortals, limited in their power. Consequently, David realised there was nothing to truly fear from them, especially with God as his powerful defence.
This insight offers a vital lesson for every believer today. Many of us face fear or overwhelming challenges. When we confidently place our trust in God, ordinary men simply cannot inflict lasting harm. Therefore, it remains crucial to grasp this truth. With God on our side, there is absolutely no need to be afraid, no need to worry, and certainly no need for ongoing fear.
Furthermore, men may indeed attempt to harm us. However, when we stand on the Lord’s side, we are more than conquerors. There is never a valid reason for us to live in constant fear. God Himself serves as our ultimate defence, after all. No one can ever defeat God, which ensures our ultimate victory through Him. By truly trusting God when facing fear, we have already secured a powerful triumph. We can therefore rest securely in His unfailing power.
