The Secret to a Life Without Lack

The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Psalm 34:10 NIV

Psalm 34 offers a beautiful reminder about the nature of God’s provision. Verse 10 tells us that even young lions—creatures known for their strength, dominance, and confidence—may grow weak and hungry. Yet those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. This contrast is striking. Lions dominate the wild with power and confidence, yet even they face seasons of need and lack.

This picture gives us a symbolic lesson. Human strength, ability, influence, or status cannot guarantee provision. We may feel capable or well-positioned, but our resources remain fragile without God. However, those who seek the Lord—who trust Him, wait on Him, and depend on Him—enter a different reality. God Himself becomes their sufficiency, and He ensures that nothing truly good slips from their hands.

The Amplified Classic rendering of this verse expresses it clearly: “The young lions lack food and suffer hunger, but those who seek, inquire of, and require the Lord—by right of their need and on the authority of His word—lack no good thing.” This description reveals what it means to seek the Lord. It calls us to humility, dependence, and honest acknowledgement of our limitations. It also directs us to approach God on the authority of His word, trusting His promises over our own merit.

When we come to God in this way, our request does not turn into a demand. We do not attempt to command God; instead, we present our need with confidence in His character. We recognise that our right to ask flows from our dependence on Him and from what He has already spoken concerning us.

If we approached God only with awareness of our need, without trusting His word, we would lose the assurance that He will respond. Likewise, if we stood on Scripture without real dependence, our request would lack substance. True faith brings these two attitudes together: humble need and confident trust in God’s promise.

Our motives also matter. James reminds us that some people do not receive because they ask with wrong intentions. When our hearts drift from God’s will, even sincere-sounding prayers miss the mark. However, when we come with pure motives, by right of our need and relationship with God and on the authority of His word, we can trust God to provide what is good.

Scripture gives us this assurance: none who seek Him in this way will lack any beneficial thing. God invites us into a life where sufficiency replaces lack—not because of our strength, but because of His faithfulness. He loves us and gave Himself for us. Those who have tasted His goodness understand why David declares, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him” (Psalm 34:8).
Victory, provision, and abundance flow from Him when we seek Him diligently, wait patiently, and trust deeply. In His perfect timing, God will act and reveal His goodness.
Amen.
