The Purse of Sin: A Warning Against Aligning with Evil

The Purse of Sin: A Warning Against Aligning with Evil - Proverbs 1:14

Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse

Proverbs 1:14 NKJV

When a group of people come together to do evil, they often unite under a common purpose, forming “the purse of sin.” This unity in wrongdoing is similar to when people come together for good. From our text today, we see the Teacher’s warning to us about the consequences of associating with sinners. There is always a deception that sinners use to lure others into their schemes, inviting them to participate in their evil deeds. In verse 14, the sinners suggest pooling their resources. Saying, “Let us do this thing together; let us put all our gains into one purse.” When we align ourselves with sinners, we inevitably face the consequences of such decisions.

The purse of sin carries the wages of sin, which is death. Often, this death does not come immediately, for the devil is cunning. He allows a person to remain in his grip for a long time before dealing out punishment. You may have been amassing wealth illegally, believing nothing will happen to you because you haven’t been caught. It is imperative to note that this inevitably leads to death. Scripture says in Romans 6:23: “The wages of sin is death”. Meanwhile, there is no escape from the consequences of carrying that purse.

When you continue to align yourself with sinners, filling the purse of sin with your gains, a day will come when it is full, and the wages—death—will be your payment. Every action has consequences, and God, in His mercy, calls everyone to repentance, not wishing for anyone to perish. However, if you persist in casting your lot with sinners, you will ultimately face the day when you receive death, the inevitable outcome of the purse of sin you carry.

This serves as a warning. Do not cast your lot with sinners, nor fill the purse of sin. Because its wages is death, a fate from which there is no escape.
