The Grace of God: Securing Unmerited Divine Qualification

The Grace of God: Securing Unmerited Divine Qualification - Acts 7:46

David found favour with God and asked for the privilege of building a permanent Temple for the God of Jacob.

Acts 7:46 NLT

No man can become anything tangible or useful in the kingdom of God without receiving the grace (unmerited favour) of God. Likewise, no sacrifice and offerings are meaningless unless they are seasoned with grace. Even the most robust efforts are futile without it. So, irrespective of the strength of a man, and the amount of effort he can exercise in doing the work of God, if his life is void of the grace of God, he would only labour and toil in vain.

The grace of God is the divine qualification for God’s use and glory. Therefore, if any man would become anything meaningful and useful in the kingdom of God, he must find favour with God. David was not actually planning to become king. He was an ordinary shepherd boy. Young, though he was, he was diligent in his father’s business. He did not use laziness as an excuse because he was the youngest. However, it is important to note that the Lord saw something in David which qualified him for His favour.

Samuel said to Saul, “In this same way the LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today. He has given the kingdom to one of your friends, a man who is a better person than you.”

1 Samuel 15:28 ERV

Though Saul was so many things that David was not, yet God preferred David over Saul. What then, made David better than Saul before the Lord?

The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you feel sorry for Saul? I have rejected him as king of Israel. Fill your horn with oil and go to Bethlehem. I am sending you to Jesse who lives in Bethlehem, because I have chosen one of his sons to be the new king.”

1 Samuel 16:1 ERV

When grace operates in a person’s life, there’s no need for campaigning or seeking votes. Instead, he receives a direct appointment; God takes him and put him in office.

“You must say this to my servant David: ‘This is what the LORD All-Powerful says: I chose you while you were out in the pasture following the sheep. I took you from that job and made you the leader of my people, the Israelites.”

2 Samuel 7:8 ERV

When grace operates in a person’s life, God directly appoints them to their role. Background and experience become irrelevant. Who could have imagined that a shepherd (an ordinary herdsman) can become a king (ruler over a nation)? If grace is capable of doing these kinds of miracles in the life of a man, then it is important to consider this critical question: “how does grace come?”
