The Chastening of the Lord: The Love Behind His Rebuke

My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor detest His correction. For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

Proverbs 3:11-12 NKJV

Chastening and correction are only for sons. It is a child that the Lord delights in, that He takes time to correct. Therefore, our disposition to the chastening of the Lord should be acceptance, acknowledgement and obedience. The chastening of the Lord produces life and godliness in a man. Transformation occurs when we yield ourselves to correction.

When God chastens us, it is a sign that we are His children whom He loves. A person God does not correct is no longer a genuine son. He might still bear the name, but important things would not be committed to his hands. So, do not despise the chastening of the Lord. Embrace it wholeheartedly. Find joy when God points your attention to an area in your life that needs a change.

Moreover, there are consequences when a man does not take God’s correction. Such a man will come to a point of reprobation. His conscience will not be pricked when he does something wrong, and such a man will not find anything wrong in a sinful lifestyle.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Romans 1:28 KJV

Do not despise the chastening of the Lord. One of the ways to know the Lord loves you is that He will continue to correct you. Let’s take a look at the children of Israel. Although they tend to move out of God’s will, He did not stop correcting them. He would always warn them when they were going astray. Sometimes, He would give over to their enemy just to correct them. He wanted their gaze and love to be singular. The moment God took His eyes from them and left them to themselves, calamities from different angles befell them.

So, as a believer, never detest the Lord’s correction. His corrections are there to produce the life of Jesus in you. His chastening is proof of His love for you. Embrace it!
