Staying Connected to God in Every Season

While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him a second time.

Jeremiah 33:1 NIV

Jeremiah’s situation was far from ideal. Confined in the courtyard of the guard, he was essentially imprisoned for doing what was right—speaking God’s truth. It was an uncomfortable, restrictive environment, both physically and emotionally. Yet even there, he remained spiritually connected. The word of the Lord came to him—not for the first time, but a second time.

This moment isn’t just about God’s ability to speak in hard places; it’s about Jeremiah’s readiness to listen, even while in confinement. His physical limitations didn’t hinder his spiritual sensitivity. He didn’t wait for better conditions before turning his heart to the Lord. He stayed connected—faithful, receptive, and alert to the voice of God.

Many of us may find it relatively easy to stay prayerful or hopeful in the early stages of a trial. But what happens when the hardship persists? When release is delayed, or when answers don’t come quickly, do we maintain our closeness with God—or drift away?

Jeremiah’s example challenges us deeply. He didn’t postpone his devotion. Neither did he say, “I’ll seek God again once things improve.” He didn’t allow confinement to become a reason for spiritual silence. Instead, he remained in communion with God, actively engaged in the relationship, even in adversity.

This passage invites us to examine the state of our hearts. Are we only tuned in to God when life feels manageable? Or do we remain connected when our surroundings become uncomfortable, uncertain, or painful?

Consistency is an evidence of true spiritual maturity. It’s the decision to stay close to God in every season—not just when it’s easy, but when it’s costly. To remain spiritually open and attentive in hardship is to declare that our relationship with God is not circumstantial, but rooted in trust and love.

Let Jeremiah’s unwavering attentiveness stir us to press in rather than pull back. No matter the difficulty, we are to keep the lines of communion with God open. His voice is near—but we must choose to keep listening.
