Selfishness or Service? Reflecting Jesus in a Me-First World

For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 2:21 NIV

Selfishness is one of the nature of the fallen man. People naturally prioritise their own needs, seeking what benefits them the most. The world operates on a me-first mindset, constantly asking, How do I get this for myself? This self-centred approach governs many decisions and interactions, often at the expense of others.

However, as believers, we are called to a different standard. Our passage in Philippians reveals that everyone pursues their self-interests. However, a regenerated life reflects His nature in selflessness. While the world may see this as foolishness, for a person of faith, it is the very essence of Christlikeness.

Jesus exemplified selflessness in the most profound way. He did not prioritise His own comfort or safety when He went to the cross. Instead, He willingly laid down His life for us, demonstrating a love that seeks the good of others before oneself. He did not come to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28).

Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus consistently put others before Himself. His love was sacrificial, never self-seeking, and always driven by a desire to glorify the Father and redeem humanity. As we follow Christ, we must embrace the same attitude. The call to selflessness is not an optional aspect of Christianity; it is at the core of our faith. Philippians 2:3-4 urges us to “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others”.

Living selflessly means breaking free from the mindset that constantly asks, What’s in it for me? Instead, we should cultivate a heart that mirrors Christ’s—one that seeks the well-being of others above personal gain. It means choosing to serve even when it is inconvenient. It is giving without expecting anything in return and showing love to the undeserving.

This kind of life requires surrender. It demands that we put our natural tendencies toward selfishness to death and allow Christ to work in us. A life centred on self leads to emptiness, but a life lived for Christ and others leads to true fulfilment.

When believers live selflessly, it transforms relationships, families, and communities. It fosters unity within the body of Christ, demonstrating the love of God in a tangible way. Selfless living also serves as a powerful witness to the world. In a society obsessed with self-promotion and personal gain, a life that reflects Christ’s humility and love stands out.

Moreover, God rewards those who choose to live beyond themselves. Proverbs 11:25 reminds us, “a generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed”. When we put others first, we do not lose; rather, we gain a deeper sense of purpose and joy in Christ.

Are you willing to live beyond yourself? Choose today to trade selfishness for selflessness. Choose to reflect Christ in your actions, prioritising love and selflessness over personal ambition. Ask God to give you a heart that seeks the interests of Jesus. A life that seeks the interests of Christ is a life that truly fulfils His purpose.
