Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
Colossians 4:5 NIV
One of the greatest challenges of living the new creation life is evident in how we relate with people, especially the unbelievers. Having to relate with someone else is first and foremost an ‘issue’. Be it a believer or not. This is so, especially when it has to do with people from different cultures, backgrounds, and ages. If twins, who were in the same womb together for nine months, have issues getting along, then there does not seem to be anyone who is exempted from this reality.
However, we can all agree that God has not created anyone to be an island. We cannot do without relationships. But for a believer there is more to keep in mind when relating with unbelievers. The Lord Jesus also mentioned, in His prayer before His ascension in John 17. He said: “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world” (15a).
Though every believer no longer belongs to the world. But there is a mission which Jesus committed into our hands. Albeit, this world, among other believers and unbelievers is the mission field. Therefore, the need for wisdom on how we relate with the unbelievers is inevitable. This is because we must have preservation from the devil and his trap.
Meanwhile, this wisdom is also not meant to be occasional. There is probably no hiding place from encountering an unbeliever. You may have them among your siblings, neighbours, classmates, colleagues, even in the church and so on. With that said, it is important to emphasise that I’m not saying believers should not relate with unbelievers. But we need wisdom so that we can ensure that the light of Christ shines through us unto them.
A believer must always reflect Christ and be ready to utilise every opportunity of his encounter with people to sow the seed of the gospel. We must never slack in witnessing Jesus. First through our deeds done by the power that comes from Christ, for His sake, and for the glory of His name. Then through the word of God in our mouth – the sword of the Spirit in the hands of the believer.
Dear Christian, do not be drawn back into your old way of life. But be wise – live prudently and prayerfully, with all watchfulness. In the bid to relate with unbelievers, do not lose your stand in Christ. Stand firm in the profession of your faith. Always be ready to make Christ known to the unbeliever; make the most of every opportunity. Let your light shine before all men. Your profession of Christ by mouth must match your lifestyle.
