Take no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness, but instead [let your lives be so in contrast as to] expose and reprove and convict them.
Ephesians 5:11 AMPC
In the pursuit of a life desired by God, we must abandon the deeds of darkness and embrace eternal life in Christ. Scripture vividly describes the contrasting ways—the righteous path and the path of the wicked. Proverbs 4:14-15 (ERV) emphasises steering clear of the way of evildoers, an admonition echoed throughout the Bible.
Meanwhile, this treacherous path is synonymous with the old, foolish ways that lead away from true life. Therefore, anyone desiring life must renounce it. The Bible characterises those who tread this path as sinners (Psalm 1:1), scoffers, unjust judges (Psalm 94:20-21), unbelievers in Christ (2 Corinthians 6:14), and sadly, even some errant believers (1 Corinthians 5:11).
Living in such a manner contradicts God’s desire for us. This lifestyle, detestable to God, is marked by deeds of darkness. Instead, we are called to radiate the light of Christ, living righteously and worthily of our calling (Ephesians 4:22, 5:8). This luminous life not only reveals truth but also exposes the dark deeds of the unrighteous.
So, Ephesians 5:11 instructs believers to refrain from fellowship with fruitless deeds of darkness, rather shining light that convicts them. This light, necessary to reveal the true nature of darkness, is generated by our lives. As we navigate our journey, let’s continually assess: How brightly does our life illuminate the darkness around us?
In conclusion, the path of darkness holds no place in the life of a devoted Christian. Embracing the light of Christ and embodying His teachings are our beacons to expose the deeds of darkness. In this, we fulfil our purpose—to radiate a brilliance that contrasts with the shadows of the world, revealing the truth and hope found in Christ.
