Pursuing Peace: The Call of Peacemaker

Pursuing Peace: The Call of Peacemaker - Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Matthew 5:9 KJV

A peacemaker, as defined by the Mariam Webster dictionary, is one who makes peace especially by reconciling parties at variance. Meanwhile, according to 2 Peter 1:2 (AMPC), peace is “perfect well-being, all necessary good, all spiritual prosperity, and freedom from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts.” The absence of any of these therefore, is undoubtedly raising a need for a peacemaker.

So, considering the reality in our world today, the need for peacemakers is indeed of utmost importance. According to the Message version, a peacemaker is one who shows people how to cooperate instead of competing or fighting. A peacemaker in the home shows siblings how to get along together. Likewise, in the classroom, he does not promote competition, but he seeks to make and maintain peace.

While we may talk extensively about the lack of peace in many scenarios, especially between husbands and wives, siblings, friends, colleagues, neighborhoods, etc. There is, however, a greater conflict, which I believe if it receives proper attention and action would exterminate the root of these other conflicts. This is the need for peace between man and God.

“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”

Isaiah 48:22 NIV

The wicked, ungodly, and sinners whose lives are ruled by sin and self, the Lord says there is no peace for them. They have no true peace. Though they may appear to have it in its form, if they are true to themselves, there is no peace in their heart. However, due to the deceitful nature of the heart, the wicked may seem at peace with God. But in reality, they lack true peace according to God’s truth.

It is important to acknowledge this truth in order to address the root cause of this lack of peace. Recognizing the absence of true peace prompts individuals to seek reconciliation with God. They genuinely repent, surrender to God’s will, and embrace righteousness. Through these actions, they find lasting peace and restoration.

Ultimately, the pursuit of peace between humanity and God is the foundation for other forms of peace. By addressing this fundamental conflict, we pave the way for harmonious relationships with others and a world characterized by unity.
