Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8 NKJV
As we continue in our study through the beatitudes, we see the Lord Jesus in verse eight, raising the matter of the purity of heart. Therefore, I believe it is very important that we give a more earnest attention to this as well.
Meanwhile, before delving into the state of the heart, it is crucial to establish a clear understanding of its meaning. In the scriptures, there are different senses in which it is employed. However, in the context of this verse and our exploration from a beatitude perspective, we are not referring to the physical organ, the blood-pumping organ that ensures oxygen-rich blood circulation in the body.
The heart of a man is his seat of emotions, passions, and appetites. Also, as described in Proverbs 4:23, it is the spring or source of life. It is ‘the focal point’ or ‘the centre’, the origin of every matter. Every word spoken and action taken by a person originate from the heart. Every thought or intention takes root within before it becomes evident through speech or behaviour. It serves as the core of human existence, influencing every aspect of life.
Also, the heart is the seat of conscience (Job 27:6) and the centre of all spiritual activity. The process of self-consciousness is developed in it. There, the soul finds itself and thus becomes conscious of its actions and impressions.
In Luke 18:15, it is described as the ground on which the seed of the divine Word is to be sowed. Therefore, genuine repentance also starts from the heart.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
Matthew 12:35 NKJV
Thus, it is extremely important for us to consider the state or condition of the heart that qualifies us for God’s abundant blessing.
