The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.
1 Timothy 2:1 MSG
Prayer is the same in essence, but it takes on different modes, just as your conversation with a friend does. The dynamic nature of prayer is what makes it special when it is done. It is not always expressed in the same way. On our cell phones, there are several modes to choose from: silent mode, vibrate mode, ring mode, etc. We also have different modes when we pray as Christians!
However, the major thing to achieve when we pray is communication with God. It does not always matter how it is done, but the disposition of the heart at the time must ensure that intimacy is achieved. It is not always asking (Mark 11:24). Sometimes it is only interchange, without any petition at all—talking to God for the pleasure of communion. Sometimes, a sharp, short cry for help, like Peter’s “Lord, save me!” when he felt himself sinking as he was walking on the water (Matthew 14:30).
Also, it can simply be the aspiration of the heart to God without a word (Luke 18:13). Other times, it is a half-conscious sympathy of thought with God. It can also be a formal, public petition (Acts 12:5); sometimes, a struggle to climb over self to God.
When you notice that someone is acting differently, especially when it seems to be in a negative way, instead of wasting your time gossiping, judging, or portraying yourself to be a “miserable comforter” (Job 16:2), pray – that is never a waste. Invest your time in prayer. You may not always have the right words of encouragement, but asking God to help and meet someone’s needs is never a wrong prayer.
How to Pray Consistently
In order to pray well and consistently, you have to know who you are praying to. If you don’t know Jesus and you are zealously praying, you do yourself a disservice. You must be born again. Also, praying with the scriptures is one of the ways to pray well. You must also learn to pray in the spirit. Never go a day without praying. It is what is fostering your lifeline. Also, praying together with other believers helps you to cultivate the lifestyle of prayer (Hebrews 10:25).
In essence, prayer’s essence remains constant, yet its modes are diverse. The beauty lies in the heartfelt connection it fosters with God. Never stop praying.
