It is easy to find ourselves consumed by the pursuit of material milestones. Whether we are planning for a new possession or securing our daily supply, our minds often gravitate toward the tangible things of this life. However, God is calling our attention to a sobering reality found in the words of David. In Psalm 89:6, the Scriptures describe those who live in shadows, spending their limited energy on things that eventually pass away. This realisation invites us to rethink our priorities and consider the importance of placing your hope in God rather than in the shifting sands of this world.
The Passing Nature of Material Things
We spend so much of our lives gathering and clinging to possessions that we will one day leave behind for others. The Bible teaches us that the world as we know it is quickly passing away. This does not mean that having material things is inherently wrong. Instead, it serves as a question about our internal focus. If our focus remains on the temporary, we risk missing the eternal. Instead of being absorbed by the opportunities of this world, we should take advantage of them without letting them consume our identity.
James 4:14 reminds us that our earthly lives are like a fleeting breath of air visible in the cold, appearing only for a moment before vanishing. When we compare even the longest life to the scale of eternity, we realise how insignificant these material pursuits really are. Ultimately, we must decide where to anchor our trust. When we choose placing your hope in God, we find a foundation that remains secure even when everything else disappears.
Finding Correct Heart Posture
David provides the perfect example of a heart at rest in Psalm 89:7. He concludes that despite the vanishing nature of life, his only hope is in God alone. This heart posture allows us to trust the Lord for every provision, from the major needs to the smallest details. Rather than exhausting ourselves for things that cannot last, we can sit with God and wait for His supply.
By placing your hope in God, we surrender the anxiety of “what comes next” and embrace the peace of “Who is with me.” This shift in perspective transforms how we live in the world. We no longer live as shadows, but as those who walk in the light of eternal truth. Let us make the better choice today to wait on the Lord, knowing that His provision is always enough for our journey.

Take a moment to evaluate where you have been spending your primary energy lately. Shift your focus from the fleeting shadows of material gain toward the eternal supply of the Father.
