No Power Over Death, But Power to Choose Life

There is no man who has power over the spirit to retain the breath of life, neither has he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in battle [against death], neither will wickedness deliver those who are its possessors and given to it.

Ecclesiastes 8:8  AMPC

The writer of Ecclesiastes speaks from a place of deep reflection and divine insight. He observes the efforts of humanity — the pursuit of wisdom, the accumulation of wealth, and the desire for control — yet concludes with an unshakable truth: every person lives under the sovereign authority of God. Humanity can build cities, command armies, and accumulate knowledge, but no one can command the spirit or delay the hour of death — no one has power over death. The breath of life belongs solely to God, and He alone decides when it returns to Him.

We live in a world obsessed with longevity, success, and influence, yet Ecclesiastes reminds us that no effort, medicine, or wealth can alter the moment God appoints. Every heartbeat responds to divine command, not human determination. When the Lord calls the spirit home, even the greatest achievements of humankind crumble before His authority. Death remains the one boundary no person can cross on their own terms.

The phrase “there is no discharge in battle against death” paints a vivid picture of death as an unavoidable battle. Humanity is conscripted into that conflict from birth. No resignation, retreat, or negotiation can exempt anyone from that appointment. Each soul must one day stand before its Creator. This truth humbles the proud and awakens the careless, reminding us that death waits for all — regardless of age, power, or wealth.

Yet the verse continues: “Wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.” Sin may promise protection, but it never provides escape. Evil deceives the heart, blinds the mind, and abandons its followers at the grave. The corrupt trust in their riches, the arrogant in their power, and the wicked in their schemes — but none can stand when God demands their breath. Death silences every boast and exposes the emptiness of sin’s promises.

The reality is simple: you have no power over death, but you hold the power to choose how you live before it. Every new day you experience is an act of divine mercy, not human mastery. God grants you the gift of another sunrise, another chance to live rightly, another moment to align your heart with His will. Since you breathe today, use this precious time to forgive, to love, to walk humbly, and to honour the One who holds your life.

Scripture reinforces this truth repeatedly. Hebrews 9:27 reminds us, “It is appointed for men to die once, and after that to face judgement.” Job echoes this when he says, “A person’s days are determined; You have decreed the number of his months and set limits he cannot exceed.” (Job 14:5). The psalmist agrees: “No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them.” (Psalm 49:7). Money may buy comfort, but it can never purchase eternal life.

James adds another perspective when he writes, “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:14). Our existence is brief, fragile, and entirely dependent on God’s will. Jesus illustrates this sobering truth in the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:16–21). The man planned for years of ease and abundance, but God interrupted his plans with the words, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you.” The man controlled his possessions, but never his soul — a reminder that control over life and death belongs only to God.

This truth calls every believer to live with humility and urgency. Since no one commands the spirit, the only wise response is to surrender to the One who does. God grants every sunrise as a fresh opportunity to live in righteousness and truth. Each breath invites gratitude, and each moment offers a chance to obey. Those who use life well do not fear death — they live ready for eternity.

True wisdom is not found in trying to escape mortality, but in embracing eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ, who conquered death and opened the way to everlasting peace. Life belongs to God alone. You live today because He wills it, breathe because He sustains you, and you move because His mercy allows it. Therefore, live with purpose. Love deeply. Speak truthfully. Serve faithfully. Use your fleeting days to glorify the One who gave them to you.

Human strength fails before death, but God’s power endures beyond it. The wise recognise this and choose to live in reverence and righteousness. Every day stands as both a gift and a test — a chance either to waste time in vanity or to redeem it in faith. You can chase shadows, or you can walk in the light. The choice is yours, but the day belongs to God.

Living It Out

You cannot control when your final breath will come, but you can decide how to live before it does and you can decide your eternity too. Choose life today. Walk in gratitude, humility, and faith. Spend your time loving God and serving others. Let every word and action reflect a heart surrendered to the One who holds your spirit. Use today well — it will never come again.
