When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me.
Psalms 27:10 NKJV
These words strike the human heart because they face a painful reality. Even the strongest bonds on earth can break. Parents, who should embody unconditional love, may fail their children through neglect, rejection, misunderstanding, or even death. Yet the psalmist directs our eyes beyond human ties to the God who will never forsake.
David knew rejection well. At the battlefield, his brothers dismissed him and questioned his motives as he faced Goliath. Later, King Saul welcomed him as a servant but soon turned against him in rage and hunted him down. His own son Absalom rose against him and forced him to flee Jerusalem. Through it all, David saw how quickly human loyalty can collapse, but God’s faithfulness never shifted. The Lord not only stayed by his side; He lifted him, defended him, and carried him through every valley of betrayal.
Joseph also endured the cruelty of his brothers, who sold him into slavery, yet he rose to power in Egypt because God remained with him. Moses grew up away from his birth family in Pharaoh’s palace, but God shaped him into Israel’s deliverer. When Jesus came to His own people, they rejected Him, yet He declared with full confidence, “The one who sent me is with me; He has not left me alone.”
Isaiah 49:15 also reinforces this promise: “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you.” The fiercest picture of human affection—the bond between a mother and her child—cannot match the steadfast care of God. His face never turns away. His memory never fades. Likewise, His love never forsakes.
This verse speaks directly to our own experiences of loss and abandonment. Many know the ache of a fractured family, a failed friendship, or a broken relationship. Others have walked through the grief of being misunderstood or cast aside. Pain may cut deep, but it does not define us. When people step out, God steps in. His love fills the void, His care carries the weight, and His presence heals the wound.
Psalm 27:10 calls us to trust Him more deeply. People may forsake us, but God takes us up. Earthly bonds may break, but divine love holds us fast. In a world of shifting loyalties, the Lord remains the one constant. He holds us close, never lets go, and proves Himself faithful from generation to generation.
