Living Water: An Invitation to the Thirsty

Living Water:
An Invitation to the Thirsty - John 7:37-38

Now on the final and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood, and He cried in a loud voice, if any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, from his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water.

John 7:37-38 AMPC

Christ’s invaluable gift is the living water. What nature and religion made no provision for is made available to all in Him. He offers Himself as a fountain of relief and eternal satisfaction. Indeed, He is the only one that can satisfy anyone’s and everyone’s thirst. So, Jesus offers himself as the source of living water, which is a metaphor for the Holy Spirit.

Meanwhile, these words demonstrate Jesus’ invitation to those who are spiritually thirsty. Furthermore, He promises that those who believe in him will experience a continuous outpouring of the Spirit. And it will satisfy their thirst and bring new life. This promise is in line with the prophetic words of Isaiah (Isaiah 44:3). He spoke of the coming of the Messiah and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. By using the imagery of a river, Jesus emphasizes the abundance and constant flow of the Spirit in the believer’s life.

This promise is not a one-time experience, but rather a continuous and an ongoing source of spiritual refreshment. Jesus invites all who are thirsty to come to him and experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. This invitation is open to all, regardless of their social status, race, or gender. Anyone who identifies that he is thirsty and is in need of Jesus can run to Him. He will freely welcome you with an open arm. He does not discriminate; no matter your level of thirst, He can satisfy every heart.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

‭‭John‬ ‭4‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus offers living water to all who are willing to believe in him and receive the gift. Those who accept this gift will never thirst again. Therefore, they will have a source of life within them that will continually satisfy their deepest needs. The Holy Spirit will continually bring God’s love to their souls. Consequently, He continually brings our words to the Father and His unto us.

The overflowing river of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life will also bring life and blessing to those around them. As believers, we are called to share this living water with others and be a conduit of God’s love and grace. Come and drink of the living water.
