I Know Your Works: A Call to Spiritual Self-Examination

I Know Your Works: A Call to Spiritual Self-Examination - Revelation 2:2

I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;

Revelation 2:2 NKJV

At the start of John’s vision on the Isle of Patmos, God emphasised a crucial point regarding the seven churches in Asia. You might wonder why. With each church, God repeatedly used a specific phrase: I know your works. This statement appeared throughout His message to the seven churches. God consistently referred to what these churches were doing, as well as their spiritual condition.

Similarly, God says to us today, “Nothing you do is hidden from me.” He evaluates every action because He is omnipresent and knows all. God watches over the work He has entrusted to you, so He reminds you: I know your works. This message carries personal significance for every believer.

God often repeats certain instructions to stress their importance. When He does, we must listen carefully. These warnings lead either to spiritual growth or destruction, depending on your response. God reminds us again that He knows everything we do. Even when you think no one is watching, He sees it all.

God knows your private and public life. While you may deceive others by your appearance or words, you cannot deceive God. He knows your actions, your thoughts, and whether your heart is hot or cold toward Him. He knows if you belong to Him or not.

So, when God comes to you as He did to the seven churches and says, I know your works, what will He say next? He had something specific to say about each church, and He has something to say about you and me too. Will He commend or rebuke you? Will God rejoice over your deeds, or will He grieve?

God knows every step you take. He sees all your actions and inactions. You may hide them from people, but God sees everything. Examine what you do today so that when the time for reckoning comes, you will stand firm and stand well.
