Holding Fast to God’s Promises: Finding Peace

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23 NIV

Life often presents us with seasons of waiting. During these times, it can feel challenging to keep holding fast to God’s promises. Yet, the Bible offers a powerful anchor. Hebrews 10:23 encourages us to hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. This verse reminds us that our hope is not fragile; it rests on God’s unwavering character.

Unlike human promises, which can falter due to a change of heart or inability, God’s promises are secure. His faithfulness defines His very nature. He is not merely capable of keeping His word. Indeed, He is bound by His own fidelity to do so.

Consider Abraham’s journey. God promised him a son in his old age (Genesis 15). From a human perspective, this seemed utterly impossible. Sarah’s body was ‘as good as dead’ (Romans 4:19). Many years passed, and doubt naturally began to creep in. This led to the incident with Hagar. However, Abraham ultimately did not give up, especially after realigned him. He continued to hold fast. Finally, the promise was fulfilled in Isaac.

Abraham’s story clearly teaches us an important truth. The time between God’s promise and its manifestation often becomes a period of testing. This test evaluates our faith and persistence. Importantly, it never questions God’s faithfulness. The promise God has given you, whether for provision, healing, or ministry, is similarly sealed by His Almighty fidelity.

The real challenge is not God’s ability to deliver. Indeed, it is our willingness to ‘hold unswervingly to the hope we profess.’ This active faith means choosing to believe His word. We do this even when current circumstances seem to contradict it. Therefore, holding fast to God’s promises is a deliberate daily choice. Just as Saul was anointed king even when he was not looking to be one, God has divinely orchestrated promises for you. He will move heaven and earth to bring you to your appointed place. His plan is certain.

Applying Truth: Holding Fast to God’s Promises

It is wise to check your grip on faith. What specific promise of God have you grown weary of waiting for? Are you starting to doubt that God will truly see it through? Honestly consider these questions.

Furthermore, rephrase any challenges in your heart to reflect God’s unwavering nature. Ask yourself, ‘Has not the faithful God of the universe promised me victory in this situation?’ Or perhaps, ‘Is not the Lord able to perform that which He has promised?’ This helps to reframe your perspective.

The fulfilment of God’s promise in your life is not solely for your personal benefit. Rather, it fulfils a divine mandate for His glory. How would this fulfilment help you to serve His people or further His kingdom? Remind yourself that you are not running a personal race. Instead, you are fulfilling a God-ordained one.

You may find yourself in a position where the promise feels further away than ever before. Perhaps academics are challenging, business is failing, or healing seems delayed. Nevertheless, you can stand firmly on this knowledge: God has called you. Therefore, God will equip you. Ultimately, He will perform His word. Hebrews 10:23 serves as your constant reminder. He is faithful. Your part is simply not to give up. Consequently, hold unswervingly. The process might be miraculous and unconventional. But, certainly, the promise is secure.

Living It Out

Today, let us resolve to remain steadfast. Actively choose to believe in His character. Trust God’s unwavering faithfulness to deliver on every promise He has made. Keep holding fast to God’s promises, knowing His timing is perfect, and His word is true.
