God’s Sufficiency: Strength for Every Calling

Not that we are fit (qualified and sufficient in ability) of ourselves to form personal judgments or to claim or count anything as coming from us, but our power and ability and sufficiency are from God.

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the tasks God has entrusted to you? Perhaps your ministry, family responsibilities, career, or calling seem far beyond your capabilities. If so, you are not alone. Many of God’s chosen servants have experienced the same sense of inadequacy—feeling unqualified, underprepared, and incapable of fulfilling their divine assignments. Yet, the Bible offers us this reassuring truth: “…our power and ability and sufficiency are from God”.

This verse is a lifeline for those who struggle with self-doubt. It shifts our focus from our weaknesses to God’s sufficiency. His strength is boundless, His provision is perfect, and His power is always available to help us accomplish His purposes.

Consider Moses. When God called him to confront Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses doubted his ability. He protested, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” (Exodus 3:11). But God reassured him, saying, “I will certainly be with you.” (Exodus 4:12). Despite his feelings of inadequacy, God’s sufficiency empowered Moses to perform miracles, lead a nation, and become one of history’s greatest prophets.

Even after encountering the burning bush, Moses hesitated, saying: “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” (‭‭Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭10‬ )

But God’s response was clear and powerful: “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” (‭‭Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ) Moses’ abilities were limited, but God’s sufficiency was more than enough.

Gideon also felt utterly inadequate when God called him to save Israel from the Midianites. He described himself as the least in his family, from the weakest clan (Judges 6:15). Yet, God responded with unwavering assurance: “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.” (Judges 6:16). Trusting in God’s sufficiency, Gideon led Israel to an astonishing victory with only 300 men.

As believers, we must learn to rely on God’s sufficiency rather than our own strength. This reliance is not an excuse for passivity but an invitation to partner with God, trusting His power to work through us. He does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called. He delights in taking ordinary people and using them to accomplish extraordinary things.

If you feel inadequate, take heart. Acknowledging your limitations allows you to depend fully on God’s sufficiency. You are not alone in your calling—God is with you, equipping and strengthening you. Lean on Him, step forward in faith, and watch His power transform your weakness into a testimony of His greatness.
