Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
Psalms 73:25 NIV
In the depths of challenge, where does our heart truly turn? The Psalmist echoes a profound truth: “…And earth has nothing I desire besides you”. Though this sentiment resonated deeply with biblical figures like Moses and David, it can sound unrealistic amidst our human limitations. Yet, within this verse lies a crucial fulcrum, balancing our earthly struggles with the unwavering desire for God.
Imagine life as a wardrobe of choices. You have only one pair of shoes for that special occasion, and it becomes your go-to, not by force, but because it fulfils your needs perfectly. So it is with God. He doesn’t impose Himself; He offers Himself as the ultimate choice, satisfying our deepest desires like no earthly treasure can.
Meanwhile, choosing God doesn’t involve a hierarchy of options, a trial run before turning to Him. It’s about recognising Him as the sole object of our longing, the only answer to our yearning for true fulfilment. It’s letting go of fleeting earthly attachments and clinging wholeheartedly to the one who satisfies our soul.
When others chase shadows, we can hold fast to the Lord. We let go of everything else, not out of compulsion, but because in Him, we find all we truly need.
So, I ask you, what on earth do you desire more than God? What earthly treasure could ever surpass the presence of God?
