Many people search for purpose, yet true fulfilment often remains elusive. Solomon, a king of unparalleled wealth, famously discovered this truth late in life. His reflections in Ecclesiastes reveal a profound journey into finding meaning in life through God. One would certainly wonder how a king, possessing immense wealth and influence, could reach such a conclusion. Solomon, after all, ensured he acquired everything his eyes desired. However, by the end of his life, he deemed all his accomplishments and pleasures as nothing but vanity. He described it as ‘chasing the wind,’ an endless pursuit yielding no tangible gain. This vividly illustrates the futility of running constantly without achieving anything lasting.
Indeed, Solomon indulged in every pleasure and experienced the “good life”. Yet, his final summation was that everything was meaningless; ‘vanity upon vanity,’ he proclaimed. He saw pleasure as meaningless. Furthermore, his hard toil and even his profound wisdom proved ultimately meaningless to him. Riches and advancement, too, failed to satisfy his soul.
Finding True Meaning in God
How can your life avoid this same conclusion of vanity? The answer lies in devoting your life to God and His purposes. You must answer God’s call to establish a genuine, loving relationship with Him. This involves connecting with the divine, with Jesus Himself. Ultimately, living in God’s will makes life meaningful.
Solomon ultimately understood that guarding one’s steps with God ensures a meaningful life. Remaining connected to God allows us to live out our divine destiny. Therefore, he advised young people in Ecclesiastes 12 to “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.” He understood that a deep connection to your Creator produces a life far from meaningless. The eventual conclusion of the book is clear: fear God and keep His commandments. Living for God, even amidst worldly gains, brings true meaning and purpose. This is the ultimate path for finding meaning in life through God.
