The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14 NIV
During the festive season, we often lean towards the path of least resistance. This path is lined with twinkling lights and carols. We can easily mistake holiday sentimentality for Holy presence. Indeed, many prioritise temporary merriment over divine Mercy. Understanding this shift is key to embracing God’s humility this Christmas.
However, the path to a truly blessed life reveals Christ’s radical surrender. The true reason for the season is not human kindness. Instead, it celebrates Divine humility: God becoming man to save humanity. This means intentionally giving God the right to redefine our joy. Consequently, our focus shifts from external ‘jolly’ towards the internal reality of a Saviour. He stepped directly into our messy world.
The Profound Wisdom of God’s Humble Choice
When we submit our holiday focus to God, we recognise His wisdom. This wisdom operates far beyond commercial noise. God chose to enter the world in a humble manger, not a palace. Indeed, this choice filtered through His perfect knowledge and unwavering love. For this reason, allowing God to be the ‘Reason’ means letting go of pressure. We can let go of the need to create a perfect holiday experience. Instead, we can rest in the Perfect Sacrifice born to die so we might truly live.
You may feel overwhelmed by the season’s noise or distracted by the ‘jolly’. Yet, you possess the universe’s greatest miracle as your anchor. The promise remains clear: God did not stay distant. He truly ‘made his dwelling among us’ (John 1:14). This is not a vague seasonal hope; rather, it is an assurance of divine proximity.
Therefore, let go of needing to be ‘carried away’ by temporary festivities. Instead, rest in the knowledge that your Creator is your Saviour. His choice to become man was indeed a choice to be with you forever. Ultimately, His perfect direction and presence are the only gift guaranteed to lead you into His fullness. Embracing God’s humility this Christmas empowers us to grasp this profound truth.
Living It Out
Reflect on what you’re holding too tightly this season. Test your surrender by asking if you would find fulfilment without external festivities. Moreover, remember past moments where reflecting on the Incarnation brought true peace. Let this memory strengthen your resolve to follow His humble, yet purposeful, path.
