Dwelling in God’s Presence: The One Desire Worth Having

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

Psalm 27:4 NIV

Psalm 27:1 is one of Scripture’s most confident declarations. “The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?” Like David, we can speak these words with personal conviction. Indeed, dwelling in God’s presence is not a spiritual privilege reserved for the few. It is the very anchor that removes every trace of fear from our lives, and it is available to every believer.

Because God is our light, our salvation, and our stronghold, no person and no circumstance has the right to drive us into fear. That is a crucial truth to take hold of. David not only knew it — he lived it boldly.

The One Desire Worth Pursuing

In Psalm 27:4, David narrows all his longings down to one: “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek — that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.” This was no passing wish. It was a lifelong posture of nearness to God. Not momentary, not occasional — all the days of his life. Furthermore, it was not an escape from the pressures of life. Rather, it was the very source of David’s fearless courage.

To dwell in His presence is to behold His marvellous beauty. It is to be filled not with dread, but with awe — delighting in His glory and grace. Moreover, this is where He gradually transforms us into who He has called us to be. Moses illustrates this powerfully. After time in God’s presence, his face literally beamed with glory (Exodus 34:29). God’s presence left a visible, undeniable mark on his life.

Dwelling in God’s Presence Changes Everything

It would conflict with our faith to carry no trace of that same glory. God never intends for His people to walk away from His presence unchanged. Instead, it is through dwelling in God’s presence that He shapes and renews us. His light and His glory transform us from the inside out.

While we may need many things in life, Matthew 6:33 makes the priority unmistakably clear: seek first the kingdom of God. Ultimately, our deepest desire must be God Himself. Not as a fleeting or seasonal pursuit — but consistently, all the days of our lives. Every season must be oriented towards Him.

As we behold His glory and remain near to Him, we will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13). God never fails. There is no other God beside Him. So even as we wait, we do not wait in fear. We wait in the settled confidence that He is faithful. Lord, help me to wait. Help me not to lose faith or wither away. Help me to wait with confident trust in You.

Living It Out

Dwelling in God’s presence is not a seasonal retreat — it is a lifelong orientation towards God. Like David, let your one desire be to gaze on His beauty and seek Him every day. Those who wait on Him will always see His goodness in the land of the living.
