Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. “ ‘From this day on I will bless you.’ ”
Haggai 2:19 NIV
This verse reveals God’s promise of blessing through the prophet Haggai. However, before we embrace this blessing, it’s crucial to consider the question preceding the promise. Many are fervently praying for a blessing, with some even claiming God’s promises from the Bible. Yet, they overlook this vital question God poses to Haggai: “Is there any seed left in the barn?”
God’s hand provides a harvest abundant with blessings. The fruits, plump and juicy, are a testament to His provision, inviting us to savour their sweetness. Yet, within these fruits lies a different treasure: seeds. Unlike the transient pleasure of the fruit, these seeds hold the promise of future abundance. Genesis 1:29 reminds us, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.” These seeds, unlike the fruit, are meant for preservation, symbolising faith in God’s plan for future harvests. A wise farmer, like a faithful follower, understands this cycle. They enjoy the fruits of their labour (Psalms 128:2) and reserve some seeds, ensuring the continuity of God’s blessings and life for generations.
Thus, the Lord’s question about any remaining seed in the barn highlights this critical issue: God wishes to preserve seeds for planting and blessing. It’s a mistake to expect blessings without having seeds upon which He can pour His blessings. We cannot be idle and anticipate blessings.
So, let’s rise from idleness, act swiftly with diligent obedience, prepare our seeds for planting, and allow God to demonstrate His blessing. Whatever seeds you possess, ensure their diligent preservation. Your skills are your seeds; cultivate them and keep them ready for God’s blessings.
In conclusion, this post emphasises the importance of active participation in receiving God’s blessings. It encourages us to value our seeds and prepare them for future harvests. Remember, our skills are our seeds. Cultivate them, and God’s blessings will surely follow.
