As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17 NIV
Imagine a farmer heading to his field. He wouldn’t use blunt tools, especially his cutlass. A sharp cutlass allows him to work efficiently and effectively. Similarly, warriors wouldn’t enter battle with blunt weapons. They meticulously sharpen their tools to fight effectively and achieve victory.
Similarly, the Word of God reminds us that we are called to be sharpeners for one another. God expects us to be our brother’s keeper, to help and encourage each other’s growth. Just as blunt metal needs sharpening on a stronger tool, we too need the influence of others to refine ourselves.
Meanwhile, take a moment to consider the state of your own life. Are you a “sharpened” or “blunted” tool? Is your countenance ready to walk in the capacity God has placed you in? Are you awake and prepared to fulfil your calling? God desires that we remain sharpened, and prepared in heart and spirit. He wants us to be vessels and weapons ready for action when called upon. This doesn’t mean perfection, but rather a constant state of growth and readiness.
Likewise, this text emphasises the importance of choosing the right tool for sharpening. Just as iron sharpens iron, not wood, we need to surround ourselves with others who can sharpen our faith.
This concept extends further. Can others rely on you for encouragement and guidance? God desires to use you in the lives of others. Can friends come to you for a spiritual boost?
Furthermore, the proverb emphasises that sharpening happens through close contact and interaction. It’s not a passive process. Sharpening doesn’t happen passively. Imagine two pieces of iron simply placed side-by-side. It requires close contact and friction for both to be sharpened. This highlights the importance of the Christian community. We grow best when we surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who can challenge, support, and sharpen us.
Therefore, find like-minded people who share your values. Together, you can sharpen one another in ministry, career, and all aspects of life.
Remember, we are not islands of knowledge. God expects us to share the resources He has blessed us with. Seek out those who can sharpen you, and be willing to sharpen others in return. Together, in ministry, careers, academics, or any area of life, we can work towards common goals and sharpen each other for God’s service.
Wherever you are, you are meant to be a “sharpener” for others, and you yourself are meant to be sharpened by others.
