This is the written account of the descendants of Adam. When God created human beings, he made them to be like himself. He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them “human.”
Genesis 5:1–2 NLT
Genesis 5:1–2 offers profound insights into human creation. It records Adam’s generations and states that God made mankind in His own likeness. He created them male and female, blessing them and calling them “humans.” These foundational verses reveal vital truths for discovering our true identity in Christ and understanding our inherent worth. They confirm humanity did not appear by chance. Instead, God intentionally created us, stamping His divine likeness upon every person.
These truths shape how we understand ourselves, others, and our relationship with God. Humanity carries a unique dignity among all creation. Animals and nature display God’s power and creativity. However, humans uniquely reflect His very nature. Indeed, we think, create, love, choose, and relate because God designed us to mirror aspects of who He is.
When Scripture speaks of God making mankind in His likeness, it does not imply a physical resemblance. Instead, it means God created humans to reflect His character, creativity, moral awareness, and relational nature. For instance, Genesis 1:26 already declares, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” Consequently, this divine stamp gives every human life inherent value.
This inherent value profoundly challenges hatred, abuse, discrimination, and injustice. When people harm others, they dishonour the image of God within them. For example, James 3:9 reinforces this truth. It states we should not curse others because they are made in God’s likeness. Consequently, every person possesses God-given worth. This holds true regardless of background, status, or history.
Created Male and Female: Equality and Purpose
Genesis 5:2 further emphasises God created humanity as male and female. This statement affirms both equality and distinction. Indeed, both genders equally reflect God’s image. Furthermore, both carry the same value and blessing from God. Genesis 1:27 confirms, “So God created mankind in his own image… male and female he created them.” God did not create one gender superior to the other. Rather, He designed both to work together. They reflect Him together and fulfil His purposes together.
The verse also states that God blessed them. Blessing in Scripture signifies empowerment to live, multiply, flourish, and fulfil God’s purpose. Genesis 1:28 shows God blessed humanity and gave them responsibility. This includes dominating the earth. Ultimately, God did not create humanity for struggle. Instead, He created humanity under blessing, favour, and purpose. Even though sin later damaged creation, God’s original intention and His redemption provision still reveal His loving heart towards humanity.
Restoring Identity Through Christ
These verses also point forward to Jesus. Sin damaged the image of God in humanity. However, Christ came to restore it fully. For example, Colossians 1:15 calls Jesus “the image of the invisible God.” Hebrews 1:3 adds that Jesus is the exact representation of God’s being. Indeed, through Christ, humanity sees God’s perfect image again. Romans 8:29 explains that God’s plan includes shaping believers into the likeness of His Son.
You will live in the fullness of your identity if you accept Christ. True identity does not come from culture, achievement, status, or human approval. Instead, true identity comes from reconciliation with the Creator. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.” Through Christ, your identity becomes restored, renewed, and realigned with God’s original design. Ephesians 4:24 describes this new life. It means putting on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. This is crucial for discovering your true identity in Christ.
When someone accepts Christ, they do not become someone God never intended them to be. Instead, they step into who God always created them to become. Specifically, John 1:12 promises, “To all who did receive him… he gave the right to become children of God.” Consequently, your identity shifts from separation to belonging. It moves from brokenness to restoration, and from confusion to purpose.
Living It Out
Genesis 5:1–2 ultimately reminds us of three core truths. God intentionally created humanity, bestowing His likeness and dignity. He also blessed humanity with purpose and a unique identity. Through Christ, that identity finds full restoration and expression. Therefore, embrace the profound truth that you carry God’s image. Walk in a relationship with your Creator and truly experience discovering your true identity in Christ.
