Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.
Mark 13:21 NLT
Jesus gave this warning during His teaching on the end times. He prepared His disciples for confusion and deception. Many will rise, claiming to be Him or to know the secret of His return. He told them clearly: Do not believe these claims.
The warning speaks directly to our world today. Many voices compete for attention. Some leaders appear charismatic and convincing. Imagine someone drawing crowds by promising prosperity or healing. People might believe, especially if signs or wonders follow. Yet Jesus taught that His return will not happen in secret. It will be visible to everyone, impossible to miss.
This truth repeats across Scripture. Matthew 24:23-24 says that false messiahs and prophets will perform signs so convincing that even believers could be deceived. Paul also warns in 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 that Satan will use counterfeit power to mislead those who reject the truth. But Jesus promises safety for His followers. In John 10:27, He says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Those who know Him will recognise His voice even when false teachers speak loudly.
So how do we respond? We must remain grounded in God’s Word. Truth protects us from lies. We should test every teaching, as John instructs, and not chase after miracles as proof of God’s presence. Instead, we seek Christ Himself. His second coming will not need a human announcement. When He returns, the whole world will see His glory at once.
Mark 13:21 is more than an old warning. It speaks to every generation. Our world is full of spiritual confusion and false promises. Jesus calls His people to stand firm and stay alert. No counterfeit will compare with the true Messiah. When He returns, His power and presence will be unmistakable.
Living It Out
Until that day, we must remain faithful, anchored in Scripture, and guided by the Spirit. The counterfeits of this world cannot shake our hope in Christ.
