Developing the Capacity to Obey God Through Christ

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—but my ears you have opened—burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.

Psalm 40:6 NIV

Many believers find themselves struggling with the concept of true spiritual service. We often focus on outward rituals and sacrifices, yet Psalm 40:6 reminds us that these are not what God truly desires. Instead, Scripture reveals that the Father delights in developing the capacity to obey God within His children. This spiritual transformation begins when He opens our ears to hear His instructions clearly. By understanding this divine process, we can move from mechanical duty into a life of willing service that brings joy to our Creator.

In the beginning, God created humanity with the natural ability to perceive and respond to His voice. However, the entrance of sin into the world effectively shut the ears of man, robbing us of our original sensitivity to the Father’s will. This spiritual deafness meant that we could no longer hear or perform what God required of us. Consequently, our efforts became focused on external sacrifices rather than the internal alignment of our hearts. Sin did not just make us disobedient; it fundamentally closed the channel through which we communicate with the Lord.

Fortunately, we find the provision for our restoration entirely through our union with the Lord Jesus Christ. When Christ came into the world, He possessed a body specifically prepared for the Father’s purposes. Hebrews 10:5 explains that Jesus entered the world without the baggage of sin, having ears that the Spirit opened perfectly to His leading. Therefore, developing the capacity to obey God is not something we achieve through human effort, but something we receive by abiding in the pattern of Christ. He serves as the blueprint for our spiritual growth, offering us the same life and capacity He exercised during His earthly ministry.

Union with Christ in Developing the Capacity to Obey God

As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, we must realise that our progress depends on the cleansing of our hearts. The heart serves as the primary source of life for every other part of our spiritual being. If the heart remains insensitive or unpurged, our ears and eyes will continue to struggle with perceiving the will of the Lord. Therefore, we should seek that one-time cleansing from sin followed by a progressive mastery of our walk with Him. Only when His grace saturates our hearts can we truly hear, see, and speak in accordance with His divine plan.

Living It Out

Ultimately, the life we now possess in Christ reflects the glory of the Lord. By developing the capacity to obey God, we ensure that our entire existence becomes a living testimony of His power. Let us embrace this gift, allowing Him to open our ears and purify our hearts for His service.
