Then they said to each other, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let’s go at once and report this to the royal palace.”
2 Kings 7:9 NIV
Imagine being exiled, confined outside a city due to leprosy, and facing constant hunger and despair. That was the reality for the four lepers mentioned in 2 Kings 7. However, in a surprising twist, they stumbled upon a deserted enemy camp filled with food and riches. Initially, they enjoyed this bounty for themselves, but a moral awakening struck them: “This is a day of good news, and we are keeping it to ourselves!”
So, instead of indulging solely for themselves, they realized something profound: this was not just a provision for them. It dawned on them that they had a responsibility to share this news with the starving city within.
These lepers didn’t see their situation as just another ordinary day. They didn’t just see another ordinary day. Instead, they understood the significance of the moment: God had lifted the siege, abundance arrived, and lives could be saved. They weren’t passive beneficiaries; they felt compelled to act. To them, it was a day of good news and God’s intervention.
So, this verse becomes a challenge for us all. Do we recognize the significance of the moments in our own lives? Are we blind to the “days of good news” around us? Likewise, are we content with personal blessings, neglecting the needs of others? Perhaps a seemingly ordinary situation holds hidden opportunities to bring light and hope to others.
Meanwhile, the lepers didn’t shy away from self-reflection. They questioned their initial impulse to keep the news to themselves. In the same way, this is a call for us to examine our own actions and choices. Are we truly living in alignment with what God desires for us? Would He approve of our choices, even if no one else knows?
Furthermore, the lepers understood the consequences of inaction. They knew delaying the good news could have disastrous consequences. Holding onto good news does no good to anyone. So, the lepers knew their silence could have dire consequences. They chose to break it, becoming instruments of hope and relief for their community. This reminds us that our silence, and our hesitation to share blessings, can have a cost. How many souls are hurting, waiting for the light we can offer?
The lepers didn’t hesitate. They understood their responsibility as bearers of good news. This is a call to action for each of us. What good news does God want us to share? Are we ready to rise above our comfort zones and become instruments of His love and grace?
Just like the lepers, you can choose to:
- See the significance: Be mindful of the potential for positive impact in your everyday situations.
- Break the silence: Share your blessings, knowledge, and hope with others. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment; act now.
- Remember, being a bearer of good news doesn’t require extraordinary circumstances. It starts with awareness, a shift in perspective, and a willingness to share.
This is your day of good news. Don’t keep it to yourself. Rise and share it with the world. Let’s all be bearers of good news today and every day!
