and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
Revelation 1:5 NIV
“…To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.” This verse highlights a powerful truth: Christ’s love never ends, and His blood has already secured our freedom.
The Scripture first declares that Jesus “loves us.” Notice the present continuous tense. It shows that His love remains active and ongoing. It is not confined to the past, nor did it happen only once. Instead, Christ loves us eternally and personally today. He loved us before we knew Him, and He still loves us when we stumble or when we walk faithfully. He gave Himself completely for us, and nothing can surpass that sacrifice.
Furthermore, the text says, “He has freed us from our sins by his blood.” This wording points to a finished act. Jesus completed redemption once and for all on the cross. He did not leave the work half-done. Through His blood, He brought total cleansing, and now sin holds no power over those who believe.
Zechariah 13:1 reinforces this truth: “On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.” That fountain now flows for everyone. The blood of Jesus cleanses not only Israel but the whole world. He paid the price completely, and now the way into God’s presence stands open to all who receive it by faith.
Paul confirms the same reality in 1 Corinthians 6:11: “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” Notice the past tense. This truth is not a future promise but a present reality. Christ has already washed, sanctified, and justified those who belong to Him.
Therefore, Jesus does not need to return to the cross. His one sacrifice covers every soul for all time. When someone receives Him, they step into a victory He already secured. Through new birth in Christ, they live in the fullness of His finished work.
This is the glory of Revelation 1:5. Christ’s love continues without end, and His blood has fully secured our freedom. When we embrace this truth, we can live each day in His victory.
Living It Out
Never doubt the love of Christ. He surrounds you today as much as He did yesterday, and He will tomorrow. At the same time, trust the freedom His blood has secured. Do not act as though the work remains unfinished. Instead, walk boldly in the victory Jesus has already won for you.
