Chosen by God: Called to Know, See, and Hear Him

Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth.‬‬

‭‭Acts‬ ‭22‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV

In Acts 22:14, Paul recalls the words spoken to him after his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. These words reveal a profound truth: you have been chosen by God, not appointed by people. Your calling does not rest on expertise, credentials, or any influence you could possess. The Almighty, Sovereign Lord Himself has chosen you — not as a reward for your works or a recognition of your worthiness, but entirely out of His own will and purpose.

When God calls, it is never for an empty or wasted life. His choosing is intentional. In Paul’s account, the sequence is significant: to know His will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear words from His mouth. Before any task or responsibility, God’s desire is relationship. He calls us first to know Him.

Knowing His will is not a casual pursuit; it is a call to holiness. Sin clouds spiritual perception and makes it impossible to truly discern God’s will. This calling is an invitation to walk in righteousness, and God equips us with both knowledge and grace to obey. He rescues us from the mire of sin and brings us into a place where we can know His heart, behold Jesus the Righteous One, and hear His voice.

But hearing is never meant to end with information. When God speaks, His words carry the expectation of obedience. They are not for head knowledge alone but for transformation — lived out daily in faith and action.

This is a privilege we must honour. We cannot take it lightly or treat it as common. To be chosen by God is to be entrusted with His purpose, but more importantly, with Himself. Before you were called to do for Him, you were called first to be with Him — to know Him, to see Him, and to hear Him.

That also means guarding your heart and life from anything that could dull your sensitivity to His voice or hinder your vision of His glory. The enemy will seek to distract, tempt, or discourage, but the call of God demands vigilance.

Living It Out

God’s choice over your life is not random. It is deliberate and purposeful. He has chosen you first to know His will, to see Jesus, and to hear His voice. Guard this privilege. Walk in holiness, not as a way to earn His call, but to protect the intimacy it brings. Listen carefully to what He says — and obey. For the One who has chosen you will also equip you to fulfil His purpose.
