King Jotham became powerful because he was careful to live in obedience to the LORD his God.
2 Chronicles 27:6 NLT
2 Chronicles 27 highlights the power of obedience through the story of Jotham, the son of King Uzziah, who ruled after God struck his father with leprosy. Jotham did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He learned from his father’s mistake—he did not enter the temple to burn incense, an act that had brought judgment on Uzziah. Instead, he focused on his divine assignment, faithfully living in obedience to God. He ruled well and finished strong.
Jotham’s story clearly illustrates the power of obedience. While many leaders fell after becoming strong, he broke that pattern. He remained humble and faithful. His success wasn’t defined by position or power, but by his deliberate decision to completely obey God.
Obedience holds immense power that we must never underestimate. One cannot live in obedience and continue in sin. Disobedience opens the door to transgression. Pride makes it difficult to obey because it makes the heart feel self-sufficient and unwilling to listen to God.
A key lesson from this is that obedience must not depend on seasons of personal need alone, but at all times. True obedience is consistent. Whether one is waiting for something from God or is already blessed and comfortable, the call remains the same: obey Him fully. Obedience isn’t a condition—it is a commitment.
Often, obedience begins with small instructions before greater ones are given. The Holy Spirit may whisper: “Pray now,” “Study the Word,” “Take this step,” “Speak to this person,” “Be still.” These promptings may seem minor, but how they are handled reveals the heart. The power of obedience lies in responding faithfully, even to the quietest direction.
To break generational patterns and avoid repeating old errors, one must walk in full, faithful obedience. This can only happen by nurturing a strong relationship with God through daily prayer, regular study of the Word, and a heart surrendered to the Holy Spirit. Not through assumption. Not through self-will. But through sensitivity and surrender.
Living it out
Jotham’s story powerfully reminds us that it is possible to walk faithfully with God, even after experiencing success and growth. Unlike his father, Uzziah, who fell into pride, Jotham broke that pattern through consistent obedience. It wasn’t might or intelligence that preserved him, but his choice to honour God above all. Obedience has the power to break generational cycles, including pride. It leads to favour, stability, and a legacy that reflects God’s glory. Though obedience may begin quietly, it always ends in strength.
