Born of God: A Life the Enemy Cannot Touch

We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.

1 John 5:8 NIV

This passage offers a profound reminder of the identity and calling of every believer. Scripture teaches that anyone born of God does not continue in sin, because the One who was born of God keeps them safe. The evil one cannot harm those who belong to Christ. This truth carries a deep and liberating revelation. It declares not only who we are, but also the divine protection we enjoy in Him.

The Passion Translation makes this even clearer, explaining that those fathered by God do not make sin a way of life because the Son of God Himself guards His children. In Him, the enemy loses both access and authority. This assurance strengthens my heart, because it means that my safety does not rest on my feelings or my circumstances, but on the unchanging reality of Christ’s protection.

Being born of God calls us to a life that reflects His nature. It means we must no longer embrace sin as a lifestyle. This transformation is not the result of human resolve, but the evidence of new birth. The Amplified Classic affirms this by stating that anyone truly born of God does not deliberately or knowingly practise sin. Intentional and habitual sin contradicts the identity of a child of God.

Even when sin tries to appear in subtle ways—whether as occasional weakness or seasonal struggle—the believer cannot settle into it as a pattern. The life born of God resists sin, not because of personal strength, but because of Christ’s keeping power. Jesus has destroyed the works of sin and removed every barrier that once separated us from God. He holds us securely so that sin can no longer define us.

This truth also exposes the contradiction of claiming to belong to God while excusing deliberate sin. John’s message is clear: new birth produces new living. To walk with Christ is to walk away from darkness. His life in us pushes out everything that once enslaved us.

Furthermore, Scripture assures us that the evil one cannot touch the believer who remains under Christ’s covering. The devil has lost the ability to claim, control, or crush the one Christ protects. As long as we stay in Him, the enemy’s threats remain empty. His attacks may be loud, but they cannot prevail.

John continues by reminding us that although the whole world lies under the influence of the evil one, the Son of God has come to give us understanding. This understanding enables us to know Him who is true. By being in Jesus Christ, we remain rooted in the truth, anchored in eternal life Himself.

Jesus Christ is the true God and the source of eternal life. This reality is not distant or theoretical; it is God’s daily provision for every believer. We stand in a privilege the unbelieving world cannot comprehend, yet it comes with a sacred responsibility. Scripture says, “We are in Him.” Remaining in Christ is what makes all these promises practical and real.

To stay in Christ is to maintain unbroken fellowship with Him. It is more than speaking His name; it is living in a way that reflects His heart. Our closeness to Him shows in our obedience, our humility, our love, and our interactions with others. The life born of God becomes visible in every area touched by His grace.
