Beyond Your Limitations: Achieve More with God’s Help

Beyond Your Limitations: Achieve More with God's Help  - Jeremiah 10:23

Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.

Jeremiah 10:23 NIV

This opening line of Jeremiah’s prayer serves as a powerful reminder of our human limitations. This verse delves into the concept of our inability to control our destinies. Meanwhile, this isn’t meant to discourage us, but rather to invite us, like Jeremiah, to call upon God in recognition of our limitations. We should turn to God seeking His help.

The verse emphasises that our lives are not entirely under our control. As humans, we lack the foresight or understanding to predict the future. We don’t know how long we’ll live, what challenges we’ll face, or who we’ll encounter. These uncertainties lie beyond our comprehension. We lack a complete understanding of life’s intricacies. No matter how wise we believe ourselves to be, we cannot map out a perfect path. This limitation applies to everyone – even the strongest and most accomplished individuals.

Even the most intelligent or capable person cannot determine their path perfectly, aligning it with God’s will. No one can guarantee success through their efforts alone. The Message translation clarifies this by stating, “…men and women don’t have what it takes to take charge of life.” This is a crucial realisation.

Likewise, Psalm 37:23 reinforces this notion, stating that “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in their way”. This verse emphasizes that good people live righteously because the Lord directs their steps.

Following Jeremiah’s example, we should acknowledge our limitations and seek God’s guidance. Just as he prayed for God to discipline and direct him, we can ask for similar guidance.

Similarly, David, in Psalm 17:5, pleads, “Hold steady my steps in your paths, and my feet will not slip” This verse reminds us that God’s guidance is necessary to avoid pitfalls and failures.

Psalm 119:116-117 further reinforces this idea: “Uphold me according to Your word that I may live and let me not be ashamed of my hope. Hold me up, and I shall be safe, and I will have respect for Your statutes continually.” True life and eternal salvation come only through God’s constant support and direction.

Meanwhile, the good news is that we don’t have to wander blindly. God, through Jesus Christ, has provided a blueprint for living a fulfilling life. As 1 Peter 2:21 reminds us, “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps” Christ provides us with an example for living a meaningful life. Therefore, by following his teachings and drawing closer to Him, we can navigate life’s complexities.

God invites us to accept His guidance. He offers a path to a fulfilling life, one that transcends our limitations. However, the question remains: will we accept God’s guidance? Can we ignore this incredible provision?

Remember, we lack the capacity to fully direct our own steps. True fulfilment comes from surrendering control and seeking God’s guidance in every decision. However, God desires to be involved in all aspects of our lives, from careers to relationships. Therefore, embrace this invitation, follow Christ’s example, and allow God to guide you on your journey.
