But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
James 1:22-25 KJV
The text we are considering today is one that is so popular. The extent of its popularity is to the point that we make it a prayer. Don’t let us be the be the hearer or the speaker alone but let us be the doer of the word. This prayer is important and essential but it is much more than that. Being the doer of God’s word is a lifestyle which is a form of our true worship.
Living in obedience to the word of God is worshipping God in spirit and truth (John 4:21-24). It is only a man that is led by the spirit of God that can work in the manner and nature of God. A complete or true worship responds to the truth of the word of God that is heard. Our disposition as children of God is to hear the word, internalize it and do it. Do not think hearing is not important, it is because it is what you have heard that you can act upon.
How do you know a true worshipper? He is a doer of the word of God. It is not just any kind of word but the one that God speaks, through the bible or His servants or any other means. That means if I will be a true worshipper if He says sit, I must sit because He said so. However, His word is in every little detail of our lives, we must therefore pay attention to do them. What should characterize our Christian walk is living the word of God which is Jesus (Matt. 11:28-30).
Learn of the word of God – Jesus (John 1:1). Do not go to the scriptures for your next social media post, you should go to learn of Christ. It should not be to gather ammunition for your next doctrinal argument. It should be to learn of and live out Christ Jesus in your manner, conduct, conversation, etc. The reason the disciples were called Christians was because they embodied the life of Christ that they had heard and learned. When you are a doer of the word of God, it will show in your lifestyle.
