I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Psalms 34:2 NIV
In verse 1, we see David’s passionate resolve to praise God at all times. He declares that God’s praise will always be on his lips, and this resolution is not limited to specific situations, times, or conditions. Whether in good times or bad, David commits to praising God. So, from these words, we learn an important lesson: praise is not conditional. It is a personal decision to lift up God’s name no matter the circumstances. David’s invitation extends beyond himself. In verse 2, he says, “Let the afflicted hear and rejoice.”
Typically, we might think that only those who are happy or have good news would praise God. However, David’s invitation to the afflicted teaches us something deeper. Praise is not reserved for moments of joy. Even in times of pain, praise has the power to lift burdens and release God’s strength into our lives.
When we praise God, especially in affliction, something powerful happens. So, the invitation goes to the one who is weary, broken, or on the verge of giving up. Let them hear of God’s goodness and rejoice. David invites those who may be in despair to hear of God’s greatness and to find joy in His glory. Our testimonies can be a source of encouragement and uplift those who have lost hope. The afflicted, instead of sinking into sorrow, can find reason to rejoice and glorify God.
This teaches us an important lesson: our praise is not just for us. It can impact others, especially those going through difficult times. The afflicted, those who are hurting or burdened, can hear our praise and be inspired to trust in God’s faithfulness. So let me ask you: What will the afflicted hear from your mouth? What message do you have for those who are in sorrow or pain?
As children of God, we have the ability to offer words of hope, healing, and encouragement. The words that come from our hearts through the Holy Spirit have the power to glorify God and bring comfort to others. Can the afflicted rejoice because of the words you speak? Do your words point people to God’s love and faithfulness?
Let’s take a lesson from David’s life. By living a life of constant praise to God, even in our darkest times, we can shine a light on others. Through the praise and glory of God that comes from our lips, the afflicted can hear and find joy in the Lord.
In conclusion, David teaches us that praise is a powerful tool that goes beyond our own circumstances. It can lift others out of their afflictions and point them to God’s faithfulness. No matter what you’re facing, make the decision to praise God, and let your words be a source of hope for others. Praise God in every season, and let the afflicted hear and rejoice in His goodness.
