Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off.
1 Samuel 17:38-39 NIV
The story of David in his battle with Goliath is a very popular one. However, I want us to consider something I saw in these verses. There was a distinction in the things that God made David with. Although David grew up in a somewhat wealthy family, God groomed him in the wilderness. He was moulded with intricate materials that were specifically for him. You must understand that your making is peculiar to what God has seen in you and what He wants you to do. It would be futile if you wanted to follow God’s plan for your life using other people’s methods. It’s like David wearing Saul’s armour. So, it is time to take off Saul’s armour.
The desire to be the same as everybody when God calls you into a relationship is wrong. Wearing Saul’s armour when you are a David is a neglect of the glory that God wants to reveal with a sling and stones. Stop trying to wear what God has not conditioned you to wear. Take off Saul’s armour.
The way God called and commissioned Saul was completely different from David’s. Saul was a product of the neglect of God as King by the children of Israel. However, God instructed Samuel to go to Jesse the Bethlehemite because He had found for Himself a king. Saul was a king for the people while David was a king for God.
So, if David had decided to go into that battle wearing Saul’s armour, there was a high chance that victory would not have happened. Likewise, the story of winning with a sling and stone against a heavily armoured man is more glorious than winning with a sword.
What are you putting on that God has not conditioned you to wear? It is time to take it off. Why are you going about with the weight that will easily trip you up? It would be a shame to enter the battlefield wearing alien materials and not the full armour of God. Take off Saul’s armour. God’s glory in David’s life was revealed through a sling and stones. When you embrace God’s provision for your life, your life becomes a platform to showcase God’s glory.
