Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.
Galatians 4:1-3 NKJV
Spiritual maturity represents the transformation from a child of God to a ‘son’ or ‘daughter’. It signifies a state of spiritual adulthood where you can fully understand and utilise the things of the spirit. Just as a parent wouldn’t entrust a car to a baby, God desires for His children to mature before receiving certain blessings. These blessings aren’t withheld out of malice but to ensure responsible stewardship.
An heir is denied access to his inheritance until he matures to a point of trustworthiness. God will not entrust kingdom treasures and responsibilities to a spiritual infant. The inheritance is yours, but are you a son or a baby?
Many blessings, unlike material possessions, are not granted through prayer alone. They require spiritual development. Consider a five-year-old daughter. You provide everything for her, but would you give her car keys? No! She is not yet of age to handle a car, even though it is part of her inheritance. In the same way, God, a loving Father, will not entrust valuable things to you prematurely.
Meanwhile, this growth isn’t spontaneous; it demands intentionality. Daily Bible reading, personal study, consistent prayer, and involvement in a faith-based community are all essential elements. Surrounding yourself with godly influences and surrendering to the Holy Spirit’s guidance further stimulates this process. Just as physical growth requires proper nutrition and exercise, spiritual growth flourishes with these practices. Neglecting these elements can result in stunted spiritual development.
Remember, spiritual growth is not optional; it’s a requirement. God hears your prayers, but the answer might be, “Grow first.” Embrace the journey of spiritual maturity. Commit to daily practices that nourish your faith, and watch yourself grow into the person God created you to be.
