Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
Ezekiel 36:28 NIV
This passage from Ezekiel 36 assures the Israelites of God’s plan to restore them to their homeland from Babylonian captivity. However, verse 28 isn’t the starting point; it follows crucial prerequisites for this restoration. Therefore, it is important to understand the conditions as outlined in the preceding verses for this promise to be fulfilled.
First, God promises to “sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean” (v. 25). This signifies forgiveness of sin, a crucial step before living according to God’s will. John 3:5 reinforces this concept: “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” Cleansing is paramount. This cleansing, achievable through Jesus’ sacrifice (Hebrews 9:13-14), is vital for entering God’s presence. Jesus’ sacrifice cleanses us from our sins.
Secondly, God promises a change of heart. Humans, in their natural state, have “hearts of stone” (v. 26) that cannot fully accept God’s word. This is why God promises a “new heart and put a new spirit in you” (v. 26). This transformation allows receptivity to God’s will and the planting of His word. Without this transformation, a person might appear to follow God but continue in sinful ways.
Finally, we have the gift of a new spirit, which we can liken to the Holy Spirit today. “I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” (v27). The Holy Spirit guides, teaches, and empowers us to live according to God’s plan. Without this guidance, we may not align our actions with God’s will, even if they seem good. Therefore, living according to the Holy Spirit’s prompting is crucial for a life pleasing to God. Romans 8:8 clarifies that “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” Only through the Holy Spirit’s leading can we live a life pleasing to Him.
Only when these conditions are met can verse 28 become a reality. We can then dwell in God’s purpose, inherit His promises, and identify as His forgiven and empowered children. Ezekiel 36:28 isn’t just about physical restoration; it’s about a spiritual transformation that allows us to live as God’s people.
Therefore, before striving for outward achievements, consider these conditions. Has Christ’s blood cleansed you? Have you received forgiveness for your sins? Do you possess a heart receptive to God’s will? Does the Holy Spirit guide your steps? If not, Jesus waits to forgive and transform you. The Holy Spirit can empower you to live the life God desires, allowing you to truly become His child.
By examining ourselves honestly, we can bridge any gaps and receive the fullness of God’s blessings.
