I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.
Psalms 40:1 NIV
This verse echoes David’s earlier words in Psalm 38, where he acknowledges God’s all-knowing presence and the openness of our desires before Him. There, David resolved to do one thing: wait patiently on God.
In Psalm 40, David isn’t complaining; he’s testifying to the power of waiting. He waited patiently, confident that God would intervene. The Passion Translation beautifully captures this: “I waited and waited and waited some more patiently knowing God would come through for me. Then, at last, he bent down and listened to my cry.”
Our natural instinct might be to jump into action, seeking solutions on our own. Doubts may creep in: “Will God ever answer my prayers?” Here’s the encouragement: waiting, though challenging, can be more fruitful than frantic searching.
While waiting isn’t always exciting, remember that entrusting your situation to God, the God of all possibilities, brings peace. Even if you’ve waited weeks, months, or even years, learn from David’s example: wait patiently. Don’t let impatience shift your focus from God. Ignore the enemy’s whispers that your situation is hopeless. Don’t dwell on worries that won’t solve anything. Remember the words of the Lord Jesus in Matthew 6:27 (TPT): ”So, which one of you by worrying could add anything to your life?“
Instead, wait with hope, not resignation. Wait with the knowledge that God hasn’t forgotten you. Wait with trust in His power, ability, and mercy. Then, just as David experienced, God will hear your cry.
He will lift you out of the pit of despair, the mire sinking you down, the shame, pain, and sorrow that seem to hold you captive. He will set your feet on a rock, a firm foundation that won’t crumble.
Your mourning will turn to rejoicing, your mouth filled with songs of praise to Him. He will turn your story around, giving you a testimony to share with others, offering the same comfort He bestowed upon you.
Your life will become a beacon of hope, inspiring others to trust, fear, and wait on the Lord. So, the call before you today is this: no matter your situation, wait on the Lord. Have you waited before? Wait some more; wait patiently until God turns to you and answers you.
